Results Obtained in Recent CLI-contracted School Districts

KANSAS

Eudora Public Schools is a district of about 1500 students in northeastern Kansas.  The district has experienced gains in proficiency of the Kansas State Assessments while using the CLI Model.  Between the years 2004-2009, Eudora’s reading proficiency rose from 68.07 to 88.5 percent throughout the district.  The greatest gain was at the high school where reading proficiency went from 51.7 percent to 93.7 percent.  Across the district, Eudora’s math proficiency rose from 70.8 percent to 87.6 percent.  Once again, the greatest gain was at the high school where the proficiency percentage went from 46.9 percent to 94.1 percent

USD 338 Valley Falls is also located in northeastern Kansas.  CLI has worked with the district since 1998.  Currently, the district of around 400 students is ready to begin the 3rd cycle of the process.  Ninety-two percent of the students in Valley Falls met proficiency in reading and 91.2 percent of the students are proficient in math.  The students in the K-8 building have the highest proficiency levels with 95.4 percent in both reading and math.

USD 246 Northeast is made up of 500 students in Crawford County in southeastern Kansas.  The CLI Model has assisted Northeast since 2006 with math being the first area of focus followed by reading.  The proficiency levels of all students in the district on the Kansas State Assessments rose from 79.6 percent to 86.8 percent in reading and 65.8 percent to 81.3 percent in math during the years 2007-2009.  The greatest gain was in high school math where the proficiency levels improved from 32.4 percent to 77.8 percent.

USD 417 Morris County in Council Grove, KS has a student population of approximately 800 students.  CLI first started working with this school district in 2006.  The following graphs show the district’s progress on the state reading and math assessments.

ILLINOIS

Pleasantdale School District 107 is a PreK-8 district, with 830 students.  The district has always been strong, but several years ago, as they began to work on local assessments, they realized they had problems with their curriculum.  That curriculum was based on the “introduce, continue, master” format and teachers and administrators alike realized this made their curriculum vague and basically not assessable.  District leaders contacted CLI, and we helped them rewrite their language arts and social studies curriculums.  The revised curriculums were so valued by district educators that CLI was asked to help rewrite curriculum for every grade level of every subject, and these efforts were completed in 2008.
This past year, District 107 was awarded the Bright A+ Award for being ranked among the top five percent of 871 Illinois school districts.  The award was given by the SchoolSearch organization that ranks school districts nationally according to academic performance.  To be eligible for the award, over 93.3 percent of students needed to score in the “meets” or “exceeds” category of the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT).  Pleasantdale ISAT scores have improved every year since the inception of strategic planning in 2003.  Standardized test scores in 2007-08 were the highest in the history of the District.
In both 2007-08 and 2008-09, more than 90% of students in grades 3-8 met or exceeded standards for the ISAT in both reading and math (with the exception of grade 5 in 08-09, with 89.5% in reading and 89.6% in math).  Students in grades 4 and 7 also were given assessments in science, with more than 90% meeting or exceeding standards both years.

Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 is one of the fastest-growing communities in the nation.  At the start of the 1990-91 school year, the preK-12 enrollment was 3,324.  The enrollment is now 28,870.  CLI began to work long-term with Plainfield in 2005-06.  The following chart shows gains in reading and math over a five-year period (2003-2008), by subgroup.

Plainfield Results

In 2009, a total of 15,005 students in grades 3-8 and 11 tested in reading and math.  In reading, 82.4% met state standards; in math 87% met state standards.

NEBRASKA

For many years, the state of Nebraska used the STARS program for assessments, in which districts create and administer local assessment of state standards rather than state-provided assessments.  In the past decade, CLI has worked with Educational Service Units to provide training to many NE districts in the areas of writing curriculum and local assessments aligned to state standards.

Statewide district ratings show the quality of the district assessment used to measure student learning on standards and tell how well students performed on standards.  The Assessment Quality ratings shown below are based upon the most recent District Assessment Portfolio reviews. The ratings for Students Meeting the Standards are based upon the student performance on both reading and mathematics standards.

Pierce, Nebraska has approximately 675 students in preK-12.

WYOMING

High Schools in Wyoming are required to provide A Body of Evidence to the state department of education.  A Body of Evidence is defined by the department as an assessment system that is designed to determine whether students have met graduation standards and to provide a collection of evidence to support this decision.  That collection must meet specific guidelines for alignment, consistency, fairness, standard setting, and comparability.

CLI’s partner district, Converse County District #2 in Glenrock Wyoming, was one of only fourteen districts in the state to meet the Body of Evidence requirements in its initial trial, in 2008-09.
